6G and the direction beyond 5G

6G is best understood as an active technology direction rather than a finished commercial specification. The important question today is what capabilities are being studied and how they may change network architecture, radio access and testing.

What is driving 6G?

Research around 6G looks beyond the capacity and latency improvements of 5G toward networks that are more intelligent, distributed and deeply integrated with sensing and automation.

  • More distributed intelligence across device, edge, RAN and cloud.
  • New spectrum options, including upper mid-band and research into sub-THz.
  • Closer integration of communication, sensing and control.
  • More autonomous and intent-driven network operation.

AI-native networking

In 5G, AI and machine learning are generally added to specific functions. The 6G direction goes further by considering intelligence as a network-wide capability, with inference and decision making distributed across multiple tiers.

Integrated Sensing and Communication

ISAC combines communication and sensing capabilities so the network can provide information about objects, movement or the environment alongside normal data connectivity. This creates new validation questions because sensing accuracy becomes an additional performance dimension.

Spectrum and radio evolution

Future systems are expected to explore wider spectrum opportunities and new propagation environments. Any numerical targets should be treated as research or evaluation targets until the relevant specifications are finalized.

What this means for test engineering

For UE and RAN test engineering, the practical focus is to follow evolving evaluation methodologies, channel models, AI/ML validation approaches and interoperability requirements rather than assuming that every research target is already a fixed product requirement.
